UPROOT 2024 Takes a Global Stand Against Threats to HIV-Related Human Rights

In the face of rising threats to HIV-related human rights globally, UPROOT 2024, a dynamic initiative under The PACT, is amplifying its advocacy efforts to safeguard the rights of young individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. UPROOT has achieved significant success in empowering organisations led by young people and promoting strategies that include everyone. The UPROOT project is tackling the global challenges created by activities & policies that oppose human rights and democracy.

Global Human Rights Concerns

Rising movements against human rights and democracy around the world endanger the advancements we’ve made in HIV-related human rights. We’re seeing a worrying decline in fundamental rights, especially for young people living with HIV and key populations. This decline in fundamental human rights for key populations makes the demand for solid advocacy and united efforts more critical than ever.

UPROOT 2024 Advocacy Initiatives

Building on the success of its past activities, UPROOT 2024 is engaging in advocacy initiatives focusing on Nepal, Guatemala, and Madagascar. These efforts aim to counteract the impact of regressive movements on the rights of those affected by HIV/AIDS, ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also respected.

Project Implementation

UPROOT is making a real difference through practical action. Since October 2023, the project has embarked on a transformative journey in India, Pakistan and Cote d’Ivoire. The focus of these efforts is to support organisations led by young people, improve the laws and policies that affect them, and boost the abilities of young advocates. These advocates are equipped to deal with and surmount the obstacles created by unfair laws and policies.

Looking Ahead to 2024

As UPROOT 2024 progresses, the project wants to deepen its impact, focusing on sustained advocacy and on-the-ground activity. With a commitment to promoting human rights, inclusivity, and democratic values, the initiative will strive towards creating a world where HIV-related human rights are respected and protected.

Quotes:

Ekanem Itoro – Project Spokesperson (The PACT)

UPROOT is a platform designed to empower young individuals. It allows them to suggest ways to develop better policies and laws that benefit adolescents, young adults, and key young populations. The platform encourages active involvement and leadership among youth in tackling HIV and strengthens the effectiveness of partnerships across different sectors. In summary, the UPROOT Scorecard Process has effectively initiated a journey for young people towards achieving their rights through increased accountability led by the youth.

UNAIDS

“UNAIDS welcomes the continued implementation of the #UPROOT scorecard by The PACT and youth networks globally, as well as the continued funding and advocacy based on the results of the scorecard from previous years. This is a vital example of the work that can happen and the change that can be achieved when youth-led organisations are funded over multiple years and trusted to lead the HIV response. We look forward to seeing the results of the continued good work from our youth-led partners.”
